History
Kahramanmaraş, formerly known as the Kurkumaean city, was the former capital of the Syro-Hittite state Gurgum. In 711BC, it was connected to the Assyrian province and renamed Marqas. During the Roman and Byzantine era, it was called Germanicia Caesarea. Later, it was conquered by the Muslim Arabs and given the name Mar’ash. Throughout history, the city changed hands several times through various battles and conquests, including the Seljuks, Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, Mamluks, and more. In 1526, it was annexed to the Ottoman Empire and in 1973, the city’s name was changed to Kahramanmaraş, meaning hero, to commemorate the bravery of its inhabitants during WWI.
